What is a Teaser Trailer? - Mockingjay Part 2

Mockingjay Part 2 Teaser Trailer

This teaser trailer opens with the film rating screen. I have found from watching different trailers that this is a reoccurring thing in trailers and is usually how trailers begin. The first thing we see is a wedding taking place and a narrator saying "nothing good is safe whilst snows alive". I think this use of non-diegetic sound makes the audience feel that the happy couple who's wedding it is are in danger and that this is for-shadowing events to come. As this is a series of films, the audience already knows who the narrator is therefore, instantly are routing for her.

We next see a long shot of Katniss (the main character) in armour standing in front of the mirror. This shot successfully shows the audience the costume, creating her as a warrior. The next clip is her in plain clothes, looking broken and fragile. This is a contrast to the previous shot as we see how she is both a strong and fragile and shows how war can break you.

The font is futuristic therefore, links with the dystopian genre on the film. It is also clear to read and consistent with the font of the rest of the films in the series. This allows the audience to know that it is the hinger games trailer just from the writing.

The use of music is successful to create a heroic feel to the trailer as the music builds throughout the trailer. This use of non-diegetic sound allows the audience to feel like the good will win against the evil of the capital even though this is not revealed in the trailer.

In this trailer  Propp's theory is evident. All of the characters fit with the Propp's character theory. This is shown below:
  1. villain: President Snow
  2. The doner:Effie Trinket
  3. The  helper: Haymitch
  4. The princess (or love interest): in this case it is a male, Peeta
  5. The false hero: President Coin
  6. The dispatcher: Plutarch Heavensbee
  7. The hero: Katniss (heroine)

What is a Teaser Trailer? - The Hateful Eight

The Hateful Eight Teaser Trailer

The Trailer instantly begins with us hearing dramatic and loud music. This is a use of non-diegetic sound and creates suspense as soon as the trailer begins. It also allows the audience to guess the genre of the trailer before they even see anything appear on the screen. It then goes to an establishing shot where we can see mountains covered in snow. The use of diegetic sound is used in this shot as we see and hear the horses. I think this is successful at  creating an atmosphere and shows that the horses are being forced to to come to a stop.
The use of costume is effective as it shows instantly when he looks up from his hat that he is a typical cowboy character. The way the cowboy looks up slowly, revealing a well known actor creates him as an important character straight away as well as making him seem mysterious. The instant different in costume between the character outside and the two people in the carriage shows that they are from different classes. I think that they use the difference in hats throughout the trailer to show the difference between the characters class as well as there voices along with this.

The use of props show the audience what sort of person the character is, as well as setting the era that the film is set in. Gun's are a use of mise en scene which are portrayed as powerful in the teaser trailer  as the character with the gun always in charge.

Low key lighting is used throughout the teaser trailer to show the mood of the characters. Also it creates a link between the weather and the lighting creating an overall low mood for the characters.

I think that the font of the writing in the teaser trailer matches with the trailer content. This makes it memorable for the audience. The look of snow on the text at the end of the teaser trailer links with the location of the film. This adds a personal feel to the text and makes it unique for The Hateful Eight film. The colour red is used on some of the text in the teaser trailer. I think this represents blood and that the characters are not afraid to kill anyone. This idea is reinforced throughout the trailer as we constantly see guns used and that the idea of the woman being hung is a humorous game.
